How I did it: It was a process. Giving away thousands of books didn't happen all at once. But now I go to the library more. And all my clothes fit. And I am still good about it, always mailing extra stuff as gifts to friends. And I am free to move easily if need be. Read how I did it…

How I did it: It's been a long time coming. I've moved multiple times in the last year +/- and have tried to purge each time. My next move is a much bigger one and I've decided to really purge. 4 garage sales in the last year and I can say with confidence that I've finally rid myself of all unnecessary items! I'd love it if I had even less, but what is necessary is... Read how I did it…
How I did it: I went through every single thing I owned with a ruthless eye, getting rid of anything i hadn't needed, used or wanted for the last oh, three months or so. Since then I have been selling, swapping with my friends, and otherwise disposing of the junk. I have made good money from all the old stuff, actually. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I devoted one month to each room of my house. I spent a little time every few days sorting something and seperating what to keep and what not to keep. I may have only cleared and organ ized one table top on one day. Or I may have completely cleaned all the junk out of one drawer. But over time, it really added up. It helped to start making the kids keep their belongings in their rooms. When it came time to go through the kids rooms, I set… Read how I did it…

So I cleaned out my desk, next up is my clothing (but that’s ongoing anyways) and then my books.
I’m going to read them one by one and then get rid of them (probably donate to Salvation Army and/or give them to friends who’d like them).
I could always get an e-book, which is one possession which takes the place of many, and is environmentally friendly :D
The only problem is, what happens if I lose it? ;A;
Sub-goals: remove bookshelf, buy e-book, continue de-cluttering room
I’m in Colorado, but in the next month I’ll either be moving to one coast or the other, and I’d like to be rid of everything that won’t fit in (or, in the case of bikes, in back of) my decent-sized-but-not-ginormous car. This is a HUGE challenge – I need to start on this ASAP.
I’m also allowing myself to send a few things home for storage in my mom’s basement, so this isn’t a full purge, but it will be pretty close.
So there’s a local charity that does door-to-door donations pickups for their thrift store once every two months. Clearing out old stuff has never been easier! Well, for me anyhow. Getting the housemates to haul out the rest of their stuff in the garage so I can set up my workshop is going to be a little more difficult.
I sold 55 items on Ebay and made $370. AWESOME!
I also took 3 bags of clothes and 6 pags of bric-a-brac to the Salvation Army. YAY! I practically halfed my storage shed’s contents.

I will do this by selling my unnecessary possessions (junk) at a flea market!

15 lbs of paper recycled
100+ kids clothes hangers recyled
Sorted plastic bags into trach can liners and packing/wrapping piles for reuse
2005 issues of BHG recycled
Last 2 phone directories recycled
Two floor lamps on Freecycle
It is amazing how quickly stuff accumulates even when I am trying to get rid of things I don’t want/need.
Tomorrow’s plan – list/photograph clothes for donation
Cowles Clarissa is a reality TV Junkie
Lately I have been giving Hallie’s clothes away as soon as they are too small. One of my TAs has a little niece that is smaller than Hallie so I bring them directly to school.
Jonathan lays his clothes out in the living room when he is ready for me to give them away. I bring them to school to male students at my school.
Sammie exists!
Another 50 items listed on eBay today. All books and old baby clothes. Still heaps more to go!
I was in a sort of whirlwind organization mode a few hours ago and decided to collect all the objects I really love (my idea was “things I would bring if escaping the island by car”) and put them in the middle of my floor. Grand total:
one pair of jeans, two skirts, two dresses, three t shirts, sneakers and sandals
a cigar box of miscellaneous sentimental objects
a shoe box of make up and my good hairbrush
my ipod, a few pieces of jewelry, and four expensive gifts
an almost-full photo album
my red journal and twelve books
Which begs the question: what in the world am I doing with so much other junk?
