How I did it: I signed up to go on a half day cruise in Seward. We were supposed to eat dinner on a glacier. Unfortunately, it became very windy and the swells were pretty large. We had to reroute and cut our trip short because most everybody on the boat was seasick. For those 4 of us on the boat not prone to seasickness it was a lovely time because we ended up getting the front of the boat to ourselves since that's where it fel… Read how I did it…

SECOND_TIME_AROUND Doing what it takes to lose!
I did see the glacier outside of Calgary. I set out to do one of those tours in the big tractors across the glacier. That time of year all they offered was a Grayhound bus that went to it and let you out to walk around.
I make it about the bus length away from the bus…then .. I still had enough sense to get back in the bus. Oh My Gosh, being from Florida, I had no comprehension of the cold I found there. Aughhhhhhhhhuck burrrr. It was beautiful and something to see. Just unbelievable to see the size and actually walk on all that ice; and the wind coming off of it was unreal!
I’d like to see one again. Still think the big red tractor ride would be fun…but ice is ice and cold is cold…being at the base of it or in the middle would not make much difference. If near one…Go

I put in for a driving map on the google website between Christchurch and the Franz Josef Glacier. According to this map it would take us a bit over 5 hours to do the trip one way. This sounds like good fun. We will aim to do this in about 4 years time.
I’ve lost track of how many glaciers I’ve seen and walked on. The suncups and that weird pink algae stuff. And the snow fleas! What a weird and wonderful world. But it is too bad they are disappearing at such an alarming rate.

We are looking at visiting the fox glacier or Franz Joseph Glacier some time in the next five years.
madamwitty is waaay too busy for 43T lately
Glaciers are nothing special, essentially just big clumps of ice that move a few centimeters per year. They’re only very interesting when they start calving.
i guess the alpine glaciers i saw in the rockies technically count, but i’m talking about real glaciers.
