I totally hate rap, but my boyfriend loves it. He’s introduced me to some new stuff and I actually like some of it.
How to expand my taste in music even further
How I did it: I started going through itunes genre of independent music and was completely surprised by what i heard. There's really good music out there. And whats best is most of it hasn't been manipulated by the big labels and turned into some top 40 crap that youd get tired of after hearing it a few times. My iTunes are so diverse now you wouldnt think all these different genres of music belong to one person :)
Lessons & tips: Keep an open mind without compromising on things you just plain don't like. In short be willing to give it a chance but don't sell out if it sucks it just sucks.

I wanted to do this, so I started JamBase (http://www.jambase.com)
Essentially, you can register for a MyJamBase account (http://my.jambase.com), enter a list of the bands you like now and it will connect you with other people who like similar bands and help you broaden your musical horizons.
It won’t do it for you (yet), but we’re working on tools to make it much easier.
Let me know what you think.
New bands that I was introduced to that I didn’t know about for a long time and when found out about them loved. These bands are: Sound Team, Blue October, New Pornographers, Common, Lyrics Born, Blackalicious, Houston Calls, Panic!, and many more to come.
Honestly, I have limited my music taste over the years due to the amount of crap on the pop-charts. I usually find that nothing calms me down like Jeff Buckey, Moby or even Madonna.
On the other hand I have some bizarre taste like remixed music from vintage computers of the 80s.
