Perl 5 months ago

I couldn’t decide whether to get into a C programming language or Perl, but then the local library made the decision for me. I couldn’t find any literature on C, but I got one for Perl…let the reading commence!

Learning Ruby 17 months ago

Been 7 years since I last learnt a new programming language. Hopefully will get those juices flowing again.

Lisp 2 years ago

Started to get my head round Lisp. It’s good fun but not very practical!

Learned way to many new programming languages actually... 3 years ago

university brought about pl/sql, prolog, haskell, java bleh. i can’t say i really understood them properly but i think i’m over the phase that i wanted to learn a new programming language

1. Decide which language to learn 3 years ago

My criteria for learning a new language are:
a. a language which will preferably integrate with my existing set of skills and languages
b. Have enough of a demand in the market as a primary or secondary skill maintain or enhance my existing salary
c. Require the least number of unknown pre-requisite skills. i.e. it should be a pre-requisite skill/language/technology/paradigm for other languages skills or include as many known skills as possible as pre-requisites.
d. I must enjoy this Language. (COBOL is something I know I won’t enjoy, because I’ve done it, so it’s difficult to decide beforehand)
e. The supplier of the development environment should be a firm supporter of industry standards and not try to develop too many proprietary technologies. Learning a Proprietary technology limits your options and stunts your growth in the industry.

Seeing as I have to learn new languages and work with new things a lot at work…I will finally mark this as done.

It’s always satisfying learning even a little bit of a new programming language, so I highly recommend mixing it up! Go learn that language you’ve never heard of before…try that language that uses whitespace with meaning even if you think it’s crazy, or that functional language that you’ve always ignored. You might be surprised how different (and useful) various features of different programming languages can be.

Learning by necessity 4 years ago

I’ve learned some C# at my new job (starting on day 1) and in addition am getting used to the .NET framework in general.

Also some serious database stuff (stored procedures, views, etc)

Experimentation 4 years ago

I’ve been writing code in Ruby and Python and trying new things like Qt, but I can’t say I’ve learned a new language…yet. I have more to accomplish…plus it would be tons of fun to dabble in something like Haskell.

What kind of programmer wouldn't? 4 years ago

There are so many out there… hmmm, maybe I ought to perfect my C# skills.

something besides jsp and cfm. be php python guru. coca/rails. xml too, different flavors. Also organize all java code/classes on hard drive so don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time. Do flow charts, gant charts, pseudocode BEFORE plunging into project. Use version management system! Become more familiar with rational rose. Comment more.
