Ivymere continually searches for her ground, her sky, and herself
since I grew up speaking it. It’s not that great because I just learned from speaking to my parents and family. And watching Cantonese-speaking movies when I was young. :D
I think my Cantonese has gotten worse as I have less contact with the language. sigh I hope to improve it so people stop laughing at my atrocious grammar. I’m good enough to get by with basic conversation (I’m better than basic but I can’t have good conversations). I wish I was more confident, though.
I’ve done canto for a few years now (Official Classes and Self Study) I’m just about to enter year 3 of the classes and I can confirm that Cantonese is the best language I’ve encountered.
It just sounds way cool! Especially if your a non-chinese like me! Chinese people just don’t expect it!
I think mastering this language will take a lifetime… so bring it on!
i think cantonese is the most funky language in the universe!!! it sounds nice and funky.
i can speak what i would call, broken cantonese. lol
well it’s not that bad, at least i can get through a decent conversation. woohoo
English is a language to love. But Cantonese is a language to marvel. So rich and layered, so colorful and deep. Plus, it sounds loud and rudeāso fun. Hong Kong slang is a gas. And English cuss words pale in comparison with Cantonese cuss words. So satisfyingly crude and creative. If Cantonese were served as a dish, it would overwhelm your palate.
I thought this was a low priority compared to the other languages I want to learn, but I’ve been making friends who speak Cantonese so I might reprioritize. I’m studying Mandarin at the moment and plan to study it in China. Afterwards I might just stay a bit longer and move to the southern part of the country to learn Cantonese. I know it’s very different from Mandarin, but has enough similarities that knowing Mandarin will be an advantage in learning Cantonese. I guess I’ll have to research some more to figure out just how advantageous it is to see if I can spare the time for it.
Cantonese is a funny dialect. If I pretend not to understand it and just simply “listen” to the tone, Cantonese to me sounds like Vietnamese. I hope I will not lose my mother-tongue because I have been living in Bangkok for so long!
I think it’s really cool how people from so many colourful backgrounds form interesting relationships with each other. But at the same time, I think we do need to make sure that we preserve our cultural backgrounds as we become increasingly monocultured. I would like to learn to speak cantonese, and maybe even be able to read some chinese books so I can get more in touch with my roots. My grandma only spoke cantonese and she seemed like such a neat person. It would have been really cool to get to know her =). I think I’ll take some lessons after I graduate and start working.
