I start my internship with Hearst this Friday. Working for a major corporation will hopefully help me better define the path I want to take with my career. It’s pretty set in stone that magazines are the medium I want to stick with. Now I’m still teetering the line of whether I should continue with my pursuit of becoming a music journalist or broaden my horizons with lifestyle magazines/travel writing/food critiquing.

I’ve been involved with student newspapers and yearbooks, literary magazines, and music webzines for over five years. I’ve done just about everything: writing, photography, designing layouts, interviewing, organizing, holding editorial positions. Most recently, I retrieved a copy editing job with my current college’s newspaper, The Daily Targum. Award-winning, second oldest and one of the largest student-run newspapers in the country, etc.
You can imagine I have a decent resume. My problem is I don’t know what exactly I want do when all is said and done. Ideally, achieving an editorial or production position with a major music magazine, like Spin, would be great. But I need a back-up plan, per se.
