as an american, i’m gonna learn how to drive stick for the purposes of driving a vehicle out here in england. double the fun! learning stick for the first time AND learning to drive on the left. then i’ll get one of those vintage mini’s and tool around like nobody’s business. I ROCK. definitely a goal within my three years here.

First Lesson
was today and tonight! I did really really well at first, didn’t stall at all… but then on the third time, I did stall it. After that I was a little bit more nervous, and once I didn’t get the gear all the way into the notch :\ so it definitely ended on a less confident note. But I am pretty confident that if I were stranded and only had access to a manual transmission, I could get somewhere safe.
Eventually.
It’s too bad, M’s parents are selling his car, so I won’t have anything to practice on. Lame! But c’est la vie. I definitely don’t see myself buying a stick shift any time in the future. Or any car at all, really… Being as I am a student with no monies.

Does anyone around here have a vehicle they’d teach me on?

Haha i did try this once, and i technically can and if i were in a situation where i had to… i could always lean out the window and yell at the person behind me to back up or they will get run over when i try to start on a hill that i never before realized was a hill.

I always wanted to learn to drive a stick shift. Unfortunately, by the time I turned 16, my family no longer had any manual transmission vehicles. Once when I was in high school, my uncle let me into his Toyota Paseo to show me the basics, but I never quite got the hang of it. But less than year ago, when I was buying my first car, my dad visited me so I was able to get a manual transmission Mazda RX-8 and he taught me how to drive it.

If you can drive an automatic you can learn to drive a manual, it’ll just feel a bit like when you first got in a car to drive and you might think you’ll never be able to do it. But you will! Plus you already know all the other stuff about signalling and manouvering so it’s only a few extra bits to learn and once you’ve done it you can drive any old car.
