I am planning to spend the five-day May Day holiday hiking from Shanhaiguan as far as I can get.

It was for a study abroad class at school. We hiked to an unrestored part of the Great Wall and spend the day there. It was just so wonderful. I hope I can go back there some day.
Earlier this month I backpacked along the Great Wall, and I recommend it to all! Our driver took us to the Juyongguan section, which is very beautiful becasue he wall is built along steep valley walls and makes for a magnificent view.
Not only the Great Wall (or, portions of it…it is no longer continuous or even close) but backpacking through Southeast China and then up to Beijing was incredible. And more affordable than you can imagine.
And it will all change very, very soon. It was even changing daily while we were there :( So, don’t procrastinate on this.
I visited the Great Wall a few weeks ago while I was in Beijing. It’s completely stunning, and I found myself with an intense desire to return with a backpack and a sleeping bag and spend a few days hiking along the wall, getting away from the crowds, and trying to get a visceral sense of what it would’ve been like to spend nights out on the frontiers of the Middle Kingdom.
