I’m thinking about buying a Paint mare to breed. I would love to breed Arabs, but they’re not popular in my area. This would be a big investment, and if it was successful, I could save up the money for a Friesian. Unfortunately, the horse market is so bad right now that I’m not sure if I could make any profit from it.

I have had a bit of a Friesian obsession since I was a kid watching the knights in movies ride in to save the damsel on their fiery black horse with the flowing mane and tail and feathered hooves. There’s just a magical quality about a Friesian, and I’ve heard exceptional things about their personalities as well. I just want the experience of owning one. I’ve looked into it a bit, and there’s a place about 30 miles away that breeds them, but the cost of an unborn foal is $7,000! They also breed Gypsy Vanners (for about $6,000 in utero), another breed I’d be interested in and might even take in place of a Friesian. Due to finances though, this goal is a LONG ways off. Another option would be buying a Morgan mare and breeding her to a Friesian stallion since that cross looks very much like a Friesian. Any option is far off though, so right now I’ll content myself with my Arab.
