On Rosh Hashanah it is written... 3 years ago

on Yom Kippur it is sealed.

“And it shall be a statute for ever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born or the stranger that sojourns among you. For on this day atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you will be clean before the Eternal. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest for you and you shall afflict your souls.”(Leviticus 16:29-31)

“L’shanah tovah tichatemu” May we all be sealed in the Book of Life for a Good Year!

    joie de vivre is mellow

The Book is now open 3 years ago

As we start a new year, and look over the one that was, we have this idea that what we need to do is change. “I would be a better person if I…” I would be a happier person if I…” and then we fill in the blank with that change. And 43Things is filled with these sort of changes: lose 20 pounds, just get over him, get out of debt, etc.

I am increasingly convinced, though, is that changing ourselves is what makes us feel alienated and unhappy. I don’t think the task before us is to change. Rather, I think the task before us is to reconnect with our true and authentic selves. If we make this reconnection, and act out of this deeper level, then we are not changing who we are. Rather, we are expressing who we really are, and are being the person that we yearn to truly be.

So, I don’t wish for me and for all of us, to change, even for the better, in the coming year. Rather, if we are to be inscribed in the Book of Life, what I wish is that we look for, that we find, and then that we realize, who we really are. And then we we have the courage to use step that realization into into our closest relationships, into our greater communities, and into the world.

Beyond classes I plan to take to prepare, beyond my goal setting that I have done…

I want to go into Rosh Hashanah and the Days of Awe with:

    - bravery, so I am not afraid to be who I yearn to be, my true and authentic self

    - acceptance. Accept others for who they are, love them for who they are.

    - joy. Here we are. Hineni. There is no place but the present moment to experience joy. May our hearts be open, may my heart be open, to experience this time of the year in its fullest.

May we be inscribed in the Book of Life!
