How I did it: Separated Nov 2005 after just 10 months of marriage and received the final documentation in March 2008.
Every situation in different, I felt that letting both parties calm down and move on before finalizing all the paperwork was the best idea as once we were both ready to sign it was an easier thing to go through with someone that understood.
Lessons & tips: Go to pre-marriage counsellings even if you think you don't need it cause you just never know what will happen until its too late.

Brooklyn (NY) family court is soooooo sloooowwwwwww at doing this. Hopefully by next New Years I’ll be able to celebrate as a divorced women, not just a seperated one.
