A very useful skill to have…Espically if you play guitar. I have repaired countless guitar cables for myself and friends as well as fixed jacks and changed out pickups.

its one of the best, cheapest, and coolest skills to have. $10 for an iron, $5 every few months for some solder. I learned it in electronics in high school, and i use it whenever i can. For example, I rewired an xbox controller to work with PC- a simple job, but awesome nonetheless.

this is way fun and you’ll find many things other than guitar parts to solder. watch out for fumes, however. and the smoke going in your eyes- whew!
A few months ago I got a free DDR-style dance pad from Kraft Foods (mmm, mac and cheese) for use with StepMania. Due to bad design it wasn’t able to register multiple button presses at the same time. Today I decided to open it up and remap the buttons following a tutorial.
It was my first solder attempt and I’m happy to say that it works great!
