I’m Filipino-Scottish, and grew up in the UK never learning Tagalog. I grew up listening to snippets of Tagalog around me, and can just about follow a conversation, but have never spoken it.
I’ve used a few systems like BYKI and Rosetta Stone, and my mum (Filipino born) says I’ve good a good accent, so I’m just working on my vocab and need to find someone to talk to/email.
Wish me luck :)
I used some of my tax rebate to buy the Rosetta-Stone tagalog program, level 1 & 2. So far I’m on the third unit and, although it’s effective, it only seems to be teaching my obscure statements. I still couldn’t say “Hello, how are you?” But I could say “There’s two little girls chasing a white bird.” I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not.
Also there’s absolutely NO English translation, so it can make figuring out what you’re saying fairly difficult. It seems that this is done on purpose though, as one of the elements of the program.
It helps that I work with quite a few of Filipinos though, so this helps.
Hullo_World is looking towards a brighter future! :)
I just bought myself a Filipino/Tagalog phrasebook to get me started. So far, I’m trying to get those greetings right! :D

I want to learn another language and this is the one I have chosen.
r0ck3t3r Working
It is free and I have been using it during work. Its nice cause you can set it up to pop up a new word every five minutes so you can learn while doing something else. I like it. I looks like the website is still under construction, but this program works so I thought I’d pass this on.
Grateware: Filipino/Tagalog Flash Card Trainer
With it, I have already learned numbers and colors. My wife is Filipino and is helping me with how to actually say it. I feel I need to learn Filipino for her, and we also plan to retire there in the not so distant future so It would be nice to know the language fluently.
jeeterbug works nights so 1125 pm is early morning for me... what to do...
A lot of people don’t get that being able to understand and being able to speak it are two completely different things. I can understand when my parents talk to me, but when I try to talk back, it gets all locked up in my brain and refuses to come out without me stuttering… and having dead air and long bouts of “uuuuueeehh…..”. But I’m trying to speak to them constantly and I’m getting a little more fluent… which means I currently sound like a three year old.
I’m a Filipina American and I do not know the language of Tagalog. I think it’d be a great thing to learn this beautiful language and keep passing it on, even if it isn’t used often. It may disappear from many Filipino families but not this one!
