Kilauea (the active volcano on the big Island of Hawaii) has been erupting for almost 2 decades. We were there in in 1996, and it was truly spectacular! Combined with breath taking beauty of the Islands, I felt like I was at the beginning of the world. If there is any way at all you can swing going, do it!

Go for it! I’ve seen one in Tanzania, and will again (hopefully as I am taking a trip to Hawaii next month). The Earth kicks ass. Do you have a “save money” goal, because that might be one way to help you reach this…
i grew up on the big island and saw smallish eruptions now and then when my family would go to the volcanoes national park.
now that it’s been erupting again, every time i go back, we take another trek to see what’s happening. if you go in the evening, you can see the glow of the lava, which is pretty awesome. it’s really cool when you think about the creation of earth right before your eyes!
But right now this is not gonna happen, and it’s frustrating looking at it everyday on this list.
Happy Phantom is just relaxing
It was awesome. Went for our honeymoon and watched the active volcano from afar. While we were there, the volcano shifted its flow for the first time in 30 (?) years. OR some amount of time that made it seem very fascinating.
If you ever get to see this, it is incredible.

I was only four at the time, but I remember driving to my aunt and uncle’s house and sitting on their deck, watching Mt. St. Helens spew ash.
Not quite as spectacular as a lava spewing volcano, but dramatic in its own way. I’m not sure if I should mark this Worth Doing or Not Worth it. I’m glad I was able to see it, but the resulting loss of life and property damage were pretty devastating.
I’m fascinated by volcanoes cos they represent both birth and death at the same time. I been to a few extinct ones Mount Teide in Tenerife for example and also one not quite so extinct Tagatay in the Philippines (see photo). I seen some from a far and some a little nearer but I wanna see one of those amazing shows of force, energy and the pyrotechnics that go with it.
Guess the best place could be Hawaii or Iceland so they have both been added to my list of 43places.
We were in Hawaii at Kilauea in 1998 on Pu’u O’o’s birthday. Pu’u O’o is a vent or rift on Kilauea that is I think over 20 years old now. I might be wrong but I think it is one of the longest continual eruptions in the world or in volcano history… Anyway we weren’t at the top of a big crater like you think of in disaster movies looking down in or running for our lives from lava waves, but were about 1/2 mile off watching the vent empty into the ocean. It was incredibly beautiful in Hawaii anyway (everything everyone says is indeed true – sublime really) but this was as impressive or moreso than anything we experienced there.
Pu’u O’o’s bday is Jan. 3 so mark your calendars! :)
We dined at a lodge at the top of one mountain and watched another mountain across the way erupt… safely but spectacularly. This is Costa Rica. We struck up a conversation with a couple having dinner at the table next to us, and they were vulcanologists! AND… they told us that it’s amazing to go up and touch an active volcano at its base. That it Breathes! and Wheeezes!
this was awesome, i lived in papua new guinea on the island of new britain for a year adn we lived across the bay from tavuvur, an active volcano. it would regularly have big earthshakes from the ash plug being exploded outwards due to the high pressure inside and there was ash daily. one night there was even lightning inside the ash cloud. it was so magical
