I actually like a very wide range of music but I would still like to expand it. I enjoy Pop, Rock, Rap, Techno, Country, International and so much more. I would really like to expand my taste as far as Classical music and such goes. Have any suggestions? 6 years ago
I mean the easiest way too achieve this goal is sample everything and give everything a chance! Check out your friends music… it opens doors, I love all the different music I listen too and it just gives me so many options depending on what mood I am in. Some things that I would never listen too before are now my favorite bands and genres of music….. DONT BE A SHEEP! :) 6 years ago
I have very varied taste in music, I like a bit of everything and even what I don’t like I can still appreciate… usually 7 years ago
I love variety in all things, and this includes music. My collection is certainly eclectic. I love to explore new sounds and genres and discover new ways to challenge my auditory sense. People who get locked into one certain genre of music, allowing it to become a ‘badge of identity’ are not only narrowing their experience of music, they are also narrowing their identity. Give something new a chance – allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised once in a while. 7 years ago
Actually I’m still working on it, it’s an on-going process. One source of new ideas which I came about recently is the pandora website (www.pandora.com) – you give them the name of a song or an artist that you like, and they build a “radio station” that plays music in a similar vein. I find this a very interesting experience – I don’t always “agree” with their choices, but they do get it right from time to time, and even when they don’t, at least it’s thought-provoking – it raises questions such as why I like this or that particular song, how come there’s two songs that are very similar musically and yet I only like one of them, etc. 7 years ago
Amazon.com is an excellent resource for expanding your musical horizons…on many occasions, I’d type in the name of an artist I enjoy, and see what other customers have purchased that may be similar. It’s also easy to sort CDs that are best-sellers. The Penguin Music Guides are also great for identifying first-class records (local bookstore). And Apple’s iTunes store has many helpful tools as well…iMixes that people create, iTunes recommendations, etc. 7 years ago
...but i gotta get out of the MJ bubble. i have a six disc CD changer in my car, and 5 out of 6 of them are Michael Jackson.
What is the other CD, you ask? The Ugly Organ by Cursive. saw them for the first time at an anti-W concert a year ago.
i am welcoming all suggestions that are do not resemble emo/pop-punk music whatsoever. i have to draw the line somewhere. 7 years ago
My local radio station in Atlanta offers something called The New Music Seminar, heres the address for them http://www.929davefm.com/all-access/new-music-seminar.asp
also try 99x.com and use the key word search for Sunday School, its another weekly program featuring new artists. There is a description and a free clip. I’ve amassed more than 1000 cds over the years and I still look for new things. You won’t like everything, but thats not the point. The point is to stop burning a hole through your Duran Duran 7 and the Ragged Tiger cd. Another tip that really works in the real world yet most people won’t do is to email their favorite artists and ask them who their influences are. Starbucks made a series of cds in this vein (btw, if you have the cd of Sarah McLachlan’s influences please let me know, I can’t find mine) Another starting off point is this new artist I just found out about….Jennifer Lee, she sounds a bit like older Tori Amos and clips of her music are available at jenniferleemusic.com I emailed her and she wrote back over night telling me a lot about who she listens to. “If three people…just THREE people do it they’ll think its a movement…” (if you can identify this quote I love you) 8 years ago
