Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

    buy a car

At some point — 2 hours ago

in the next couple of years, we will be buying a car to replace our 2000 X-terra.

The X-terra has been a fantastic vehicle. We’ve driven it a lot, it’s gotten us through miserable snowy roads, and hauled a lot of cargo.

We are looking for something smaller, because we have a farm truck now for hauling cargo.

It still needs to have enough clearance and either 4 wheel drive or AWD because of the snow.

We were looking at Subaru Crosstreks, and possibly a Nissan Juke.

They’re both reasonably priced, much better gas mileage that the X-terra, and just…newer (thus hopefully reliable).

We almost bought something recently, but the problem with the X-terra turned out to be repairable.

I’m a little disappointed, because every fall for about the last three years, my husband goes “maybe we should consider buying a new vehicle this winter”, and then, after doing a bunch of research, some test drives, and on and on, he just goes “oh, the X-terra will be fine at least for this year”.

I’m kind of ticked about it this time, because we are in a good place financially, and there really isn’t any reason to put it off.

A new Juke, if it lasted ten years, would amount to $2000 a year (give or take), which is what it’s been costing us to keep the X-terra running (we’ve been doing repairs), not to mention what the difference in gas would be (the Juke gets MUCH better mileage).

It is freaky, to spend so much money, not to mention the familiarity of the old vehicle, and fearing making a bad choice.

    It was slightly terrifying

I have never owned a new-new car; the last time I bought a car, it was our 1997 Subaru Legacy Wagon, and I bought it in 2001.

It is really weird to buy a car.
